Local Neighborhoods

When it’s time to shop, run errands or just step out for a little fun, Bow Lake residents have plenty of options. Standing shoulder to shoulder in the 32-mile stretch between Seattle and Tacoma – Burien, Seatac, Des Moines and Tukwila each offer their own special reasons to visit.

This town of 30,000 is a beehive of activity and offers incredibly diverse options for entertainment, nightlife, and shopping. Burien is big on celebrating – from Mardi Gras and Carnival Days in the spring, to cycling races, Music in the Park and the Nights Car Show in the summer. Oktoberfest is the highlight of the fall and the year is topped off by Winterfest – a frosty celebration featuring horse and carriage rides.

While the international airport makes it easy to escape to any destination in the world, Seatac has plenty to offer within the city limits. At the heart of it all is Angle Lake Park, a favorite of nature fanatics and walkers. The Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden is also a great escape, with ten and a half acres of woodlands and gardens to explore. Seatac is known for its robust seniors program, as well, with health plans, flu shots and hearing tests, plus plenty of fun activities – from Mah Jong and movie matinees, to groups and classes for bridge, bunko, ballroom dancing and much more.

Tukwila/South Center
Just a short drive down the hill from Bow Lake is Tukwila – fun capitol of the South Sound. The hub of the area, Westfield Center, is one of the largest malls on the west coast with more than 200 stores and restaurants. Tukwila is also home to great indoor gaming entertainment, including a state-of-the-art, 30-lane bowling alley/high-end billiard hall. If you’re feeling especially frisky, there are even places for go-karting and indoor skydiving!

Des Moines
A true waterfront community, Des Moines boasts beautiful parks and bustling boardwalks. The area’s crown jewel just might be lovely Saltwater State Park, with a great beach perfect for strolling. The city’s marina is home base to a number of large power and sailboats. (Smaller vessels can launch from nearby Redondo Beach.) Summer is a special time to visit Des Moines – with the Farmer’s Market in full bloom, and a number of fairs and outdoor concerts, plus a fantastic fireworks display on July 4th.
